What Is Cricket?

This is a team game in which two teams of 11 players compete—one team bats to score runs, while the other fields to restrict runs and take wickets. After the innings, the teams switch places.

The Playing Field

The central pitch is 22 (twenty-two) yards long and 10(ten) feet wide. The boundary marks the edge of the field, and hitting the ball beyond this line scores additional runs.

1. The Toss

Before the match begins, team captains participate in a coin toss. The winning captain decides to bat or field first

2. Batting

  • Two batsmen are on the field.
  • The goal is to score runs by hitting the ball and running between the wickets or by hitting boundaries (4s and 6s).
  • The batsman is out if they are caught, lbw, run out, bowled, hit wicket, or stumped

3. Bowling

  • A bowler delivers 6 legal balls in an over.
  • Bowlers deliver the ball to dismiss batters and restrict runs.

4. Fielding

  • Bowling side team, fielders stop the ball and try to get the batsman out.
  • They are strategically placed around the field depending on the bowling strategy.

5. Wicketkeeper

  • Positioned behind the stumps, the wicket keeper catches deliveries the batter misses and attempts stumpings.

6. Winning

The team with the highest run score and the best defense wins the match

Basic Batting Technique

Stance and Grip:

  • Stand sideways with knees slightly bent.
  • The bat was held with a relaxed grip, using soft hands

Shot Selection:

  • Play the defensive shots, straight drives, cuts, and pulls
  • Time the ball rather than hitting with power.

Tips:

  • Watch the ball from the bowler’s hand.
  • Focus on footwork and balance.
  • Don’t try to hit every ball – play with patience.

Basic Bowling Technique

Types of Bowlers:

  • Fast Bowlers – Focus on speed and bounce.

Fielding Basics

  • Throw quickly and accurately.

Important Fielding Positions:

  • Slip – close to the wicket for catches
  • Point, Cover, Mid-on, Mid-off – close-in positions
  • Long-on, Long-off – near the boundary
